Lexicology for Reading?
Lexicology for Reading is my answer to the Literacy Crisis. It is an excellent approach to embed Literacy across the Curriculum. Lexicology bridges the gap between the 44 Phonic sounds and reading polysyllabic words. I have identified the one, Public School, advantage that we can all do something about. I have addressed the lack of Classics in State Schools. More specifically Lexicology for Reading enables students to decode new and unfamiliar vocabulary through the study of the meanings of affixes. This is a transferable skill that benefits Literacy Across the Curriculum. Essentially the teaching and learning approach is 100% Prefixology and Suffixology. The 'Basic Toolkit,' includes sixty - four Prefixes and seventy - eight Suffixes. The majority have their roots in either Latin or Greek. They provide, age appropriate, predominantly monosyllabic reading for teenagers. The fifty - seven affixes in the Primary National Curriculum (both statutory and non-statutory combined) form the basis for the Primary Programme.
Reading rules and rule breakers are learnt through the study of affixes. Students are enabled to identify affixes and decode new and unfamiliar vocabulary. Students learn through guided discovery, aural, oral, kinaesthetic and quizzical tasks. Open questions are used to elicit meanings of affixes from students through word association. The courses are suitable for all students that are reading polysyllabic words. There is no compulsory homework however all courses are supported with access to Lexicology for Reading, Interactive Flashcards, tests and games - which have proven to be an excellent motivational tool for self - study.
The family unit in the 21st Century is often complex with many extended step and step in - law members. Lexicology for Reading takes a 21st Century approach to Lexicology and aims to broaden word families beyond the conventional, safe, subject specific to include their relations across the curriculum.

The test - teach - test format is necessary to compile data on the success of the 'Lexicology for Reading,' courses. Quizlet is a fun way for learners to be tested online. Schools/Colleges will be allocated a unique access code to the free quiz designed for their learners. Paper copies can be provided and marked at an additional cost. Schools/Colleges are encouraged to share their pre/post course data if they have also conducted other well known reading comprehension tests. Lexicology for Reading ' Top One Hundred,' test is also available as an alternative or additional form of testing - this test can be administered by schools / colleges so that students can be selected for intervention programmes that best meet their needs. This will also help to place students in appropriate study groups amongst peers with similar levels of understanding rather than similar reading ages alone.
